Château d'Esclans

Château d'Esclans

Gris pink colour. Beautiful rosé with an aromatic bouquet, excelling in minerality and elegance. A beautiful glass of wine, elegant, broad and rich with a nice freshness and slight spiciness. Intense taste with aromas of apricots, red berries and strawberries. This rosé owes its name to the little chapel on the estate where 2 whispering angels are depicted on the wall. These are also on the label and according to owner Sacha Lichine, you might even be able to hear them if you drink this rosé....

Verdict The Great Hammersma: 9!
Whispering Angel, ASMRosé from Provence. Whereas a few years ago Domaine Ott was still considered the most famous Provence rosé, Ott has now been overtaken on the right by Sacha Alexis Lichine of Château d'Esclans (probably in a Ferrari). This scion of a reputable Bordeaux family had taken up the challenge with the help of Patrick León, a neighbour who was previously the wine steward at Mouton-Rothschild.

Among other things, eighty-year-old Grenache vines, lagering in French oak demi-muids (500-litre barrels) and bâtonnage should do the rest and make the wines of Château d'Esclans 'among the best in the world'. In any case, they are already among the most expensive. This entry-level Whispering Angel can be called sympathetically priced for less than a buck. But the top cuvée makes even the most expensive Ott change colour: Garrus costs more than seventy euros. Admittedly, these are beautiful wines. With a lot of finesse, elegance, depth, complexity and lingering aftertaste.

Whispering Angel had not appeared on DGH's tasting table for a while, but we are pleased to note that the Angel's whisper is still as seductive as ever. It is refined, it is elegant. It floats between peach and woodland strawberries. It touches fennel and anise with its feet. And flutters on a fresh summer breeze towards dried apricot and rosemary. Sacha Alexis Lichine urges us to visit anyway: 'In the Esclans Valley angels whisper, if you drink this wine you might hear them. If you visit us, you might see them...' Funny.
